Manchester United seems to be saying goodbye to Phil Jones for the time being, Fabrizio Romano reports on Saturday evening. The center defender has received an offer from Girondins de Bordeaux, where he can start on a rental basis. Only Jones himself would still have to agree to the deal on the table before the transfer is in place.

The Bordeaux club has, according to reports from the transfer market expert, made an offer that would link Jones to the club until the end of the current season. The French would only (partially) take over the wages of the centre-back and would not pay any rent. Romano reports that United have agreed to Bordeaux’s proposal, which is now only pending Jones’ wishes.

Jones suddenly started playing in early January for the first time in almost two years due to the absence of Harry Maguire, but the defender had already indicated that he would like to make minutes on a regular basis. At the time, the stopper was linked to Benfica, but now Bordeaux seems to be the main candidate to give Jones playing minutes. Newcastle United and Burnley were also mentioned by various English media in the same breath as the 27-time international of England, although those rumors were about a definitive transfer.

The defender made the switch from Blackburn Rovers to United in 2011 for more than nineteen million euros. Employed by the Red Devils Jones made a total of 225 official games in which he scored 6 times and provided 10 assists. In 2013, he became national champion and in 2017 Jones seized the Europa League with his team. In the past two seasons, the rearguard player hardly got to play.
