Mohammed Kudus denies a remarkable rumor circulating in Ghana. It was suggested in local media that the Ajax midfielder deliberately skipped the Africa Cup because ‘juju’ would be practiced within the national team, a form of black magic that is used in West Africa. According to the reports, Kudus thinks he has suffered damage as a result of the practices, but he will deal with that in a statement via Twitter.

Kudus emphasizes that he was unable to participate in the tournament due to a rib injury. He was part of the roster, but remained in Amsterdam during his recovery. There were rumors that Kudus could enter during the tournament, but Ghana did not make it past the group stage. “On the road back to my recovery, it is discouraging to read the allegations, which are based on misinformation from websites and blogs, about my teammates,” Kudus said in the statement.

“It is very disappointing because all these comments are the opposite of what I stand for. I want to distance myself from all unsubstantiated comments and claims about me in this way. I call on the Ghanaians to ignore this rumor and deal with the contempt it deserves,” writes Kudus, who is disappointed with the progress of the Africa Cup. Ghana finished just one point down in Group C. “Since I’m part of the roster, it’s just as much my fault as the rest of the squad. But I believe in Ghana. Ghana flows through my veins. We have a huge amount talent and with or without me will the Black Stars come back stronger and shine again.”
