For Jadon Sancho, there is a striking change in position at Manchester United. The winger, who came over from Borussia Dortmund for 85 million euros this summer, is not yet featured and is therefore being tried as a right back in training. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff are said to be confident that the Englishman can play an important role in the new system the Norwegian wants to play.

Sancho has failed to score a goal or assist in 13 official games this season. The 21-year-old attacker also only completed the ninety minutes once, in the EFL Cup match with West Ham United (0-1 loss). According to The Athletic there are several reasons for Sancho’s disappointing performance. The newspaper mentions an injury case, good performances from direct competitors and underestimating the pace in the Premier League compared to the Bundesliga.

Solskjaer tried out the new 3-4-1-2 system for the first time in the home game with arch-rival Manchester City (0-2). Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the current right-back in the Norwegian’s team, would not have enough attacking qualities to operate in that system, it is believed within the club. Sancho could offer a solution. In addition to his attacking ability, the coaching staff is said to have been impressed by his defensive skills.

Due to his reserve role at the club, Sancho has also lost his place in the English national team. He has not been called up the last three times. With a view to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the youngster will have to change his situation if he is to have a chance of winning an election from national coach Gareth Southgate.
