During the press conference, Louis van Gaal explained the choice of Devyne Rensch as a replacement for the injured Jurriën Timber. The wing defender is currently invariably on the bench at Ajax, unlike competitors Rick Karsdorp and Joël Veltman at AS Roma and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively. Van Gaal said that the latter two were not options, because he wanted to keep his previous selection intact as much as possible.

“Van Gaal’s philosophy no longer fits this time,” the coach responded to an earlier statement. In the past, Van Gaal stated the condition that a player had to play for his club in order to be eligible for a selection. “The tendency is that there is much more rotation and that there are larger selections”, he explains. “Rensch sometimes plays in Young Ajax and that is also the reason that he played in Jong Oranje last time. That’s because I think along with him. That’s how I explained it to him. But now Timber has fallen away, then I think Devyne has ended up there.”

“The most important thing about a vision is the game itself and how you should play against someone else. I was trained with the DNA of Ajax. That was attacking and not looking at the qualities of the opponent, because we are so good ourselves”, emphasizes Van Gaal. “I have learned abroad that that is not always the case. Experience has also taught me, but also the evaluation and my evolution as a coach, that I should make an adjustment there and I have done that. It has already started at Barcelona. “

Van Gaal caused some surprise during the press conference by stating that Karsdorp and Veltman were ‘not an option’ for the World Cup qualifiers with Montenegro and Norway. However, the trainer corrected himself not much later. “They are not options now. I didn’t really want to be the odd man out this round, because something always changes. But unfortunately Drommel was ill, so I had to do things differently”, he refers to the selection of Jasper Cillessen.
