The damage to the Berlin Wall as a result of the Feyenoord graffiti prior to the game against 1. FC Union Berlin is higher than expected. That’s what spokesperson Hannah Berger of the Stiftung Berliner Mauer said to the General Newspaper. The foundation takes into account a cost item of 10,000 euros, but has not heard anything from Feyenoord yet. “We expect the football club to take responsibility.”

The so-called East Side Gallery, a part of the wall painted by 118 artists in 1990, was sprayed over with graffiti the night before the Conference League match between Feyenoord and Union and provided the word ‘Feyenoord’. Two masked Dutch men, 21 and 25 years old, were arrested near the wall. They had paint residue on their hands and were in possession of several spray cans. “Removing the Feyenoord graffiti was more complicated than it seemed at first glance and is therefore more expensive than expected,” says Berger.

The paint residues have now been removed, but as far as Berger is concerned, that is not the end of the line. The foundation is saddled with a considerable expense. “10,000 euros is a lot of money for the two arrested twenty-somethings in the event of a conviction, but a pittance for Feyenoord,” says Berger. “We expect the club to take responsibility for its fans and bear the costs, but so far we have heard nothing.” Earlier, the mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb already announced that he was furious with the Feyenoord supporters who misbehaved in Berlin.

The graffiti applied by the two was soon removed, but this did not prevent the top layer from being damaged. “The damage to the protective layer appears to be greater than expected. The extent to which it is damaged has yet to be determined,” Berger concludes. The perpetrators went to work in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday around 1.45 am, when they were caught by an employee of a security company. The alarmed police then found a huge drawing of about eighteen by two meters. Later the words ‘Ultra’s Union!’ put over it.
