Paris Saint-Germain strengthened their lead in Ligue 1 on Sunday evening. In its own Parc des Princes, opponent AS Monaco was put aside 2-0 in an entertaining duel. Both goals were scored by Kylian Mbappe, who scored his 99th and 100th goals in the top French league in just 124 games. Georginio Wijnaldum started in the base at PSG; Myron Boadu started with the visitors on the bench and was allowed to come in after 55 minutes.

PSG, which came on in special kit to honor Lionel Messi’s seventh Ballon d’Or, woke up with a start in the second minute. Sofiane Diop completed a one-two with Wissam Ben Yedder and saw his effort explode on the post. The home team immediately took the initiative and fired through Wijnaldum, before Ángel Di María earned a penalty. The swift winger was in the hostile penalty area past Djibril Sidibé; the latter knew nothing but to block his way. Mbappé went behind the ball and made no mistake: 1-0.

However, the eighth season goal of the Paris prodigy did not deter the visitors. Monaco continued to put pressure on them and got a huge opportunity midway through the first act through Ben Yedder. However, the striker was unable to properly control Aurélien Tchouameni’s pass, allowing Gianluigi Donnarumma to intervene. PSG played out under the pressure and doubled the margin just before half-time. Youssouf Fofana clumsily lost the ball to Messi; the Argentinian was gone very quickly and served fellow attacker Mbappé for the 2-0. It marked the 100th league goal for the child prodigy in just 124 games in Ligue 1 – an impressive average.

After rest had les Parisiens not much to fear from the Monegasques: the resistance seemed completely broken after the second goal. Messi, in particular, was emphatically looking to boost his production in Ligue 1, but as is often the case this season, the Argentinian did not have his happiest game. Twenty minutes before time, Messi was closest. On the advice of attacking partner Mbappé, the latter could not return the service of the assist. The Frenchman received a crowd change in the final phase while the home crowd chanted his name. However, the final score remained unchanged. PSG is therefore at 45 points in the Ligue 1: 13 points clear of pursuer Olympique Marseille. AS Monaco remains in seventh place due to the defeat.
