Arek Milik gave Olympique Marseille a hard-fought victory over FC Metz on Sunday evening. The attacker came in fifteen minutes before the end and was accurate within six minutes from a sensational bicycle kick: 1-2. With the win, Marseille, the number two in Ligue 1, opens a four-point gap with number three OGC Nice. Leader Paris Saint-Germain remains far out of sight, because the deficit is thirteen points.
Milik had a starting spot in the last two official games; last week he even scored a hat-trick in the 5-2 win over Angers. Despite this, the attacker had to make do with a place on the bench. He saw Marseille take the lead after 25 minutes. After a corner kick by Dimitri Payet from the right wing, the ball was headed through and it landed at the feet of Cédric Bakambu, who hit the goal from close range. A chance from Farid Boulaya could have led to the 1-1 before half-time, but his effort was too weak.
Six minutes after the break, Metz came alongside. The home side’s players found each other easily in the Marseille half and eventually Fali Candé enabled his teammate Habib Maiga to tie the score. Bamba Dieng and Pol Lirola missed opportunities to give Marseille the lead again. Thus Milik was brought in by trainer Jorge Sampaoli to ensure the redemption. He only needed six minutes for that: the former Ajax striker was served in the penalty area by a header from Sead Kolasinac, cleared the ball for himself with the chest and scored with a bicycle kick in the left corner.
