Antony will most likely go to the Olympics with Brazil. The 21-year-old wing striker of Ajax is in the preliminary selection of national coach André Jardine, the Brazilian association announced on Friday. The fact that Antony will play with Brazil in Japan means that he may miss the start of the new season with Ajax.

The football tournament at the Olympic Games takes place from July 21 to August 7. The season in the Netherlands officially starts on Sunday, August 8 with the Johan Cruijff Shield, in which Dutch champion Ajax will compete against number two PSV. Although it is uncertain whether Brazil will make it to the final, Antony could get a few weeks extra rest from Ajax after the Olympics. The Eredivisie starts in the weekend of Saturday, August 14.

It is not surprising that Antony is allowed to join Brazil, because the winger has been with the country’s Olympic team in recent times. Ajax teammate David Neres was also there in November, but is not allowed to go to Japan. Danilo, who is rented out by Ajax to FC Twente, and the still injured PSV midfielder Mauro Júnior were also called up in November and were now out.

Brazil is going to the Games with the necessary well-known names. In the center of the back, André Jardine, for example, features Gabriel from Arsenal and Luiz Felipe from Lazio. In midfield, he selects, among others, Bruno Guimarães of Olympique Lyon and Reinier (rented by Real Madrid to Borussia Dortmund), while Martinelli of Arsenal and Rodrygo of Real Madrid can play in the front. Probably three more dispensation players will be added to the current roster of 23 players. In recent weeks there has been speculation about Neymar’s participation in the Games.
