Wim Kieft thinks that Ajax is surrounded by question marks, he says in his column in The Telegraph. Kieft states that there are big questions at Ajax about the ideal staffing on the field and believes that the balance is completely off defensively. Especially in the front he feels sorry for the brand new Ajax trainer, Alfred Schreuder.

Kieft thinks that the busy occupation in the vanguard could cause problems at Ajax this season. “Steven Bergwijn is the most expensive Ajax player of all time and comes into his own best when he can play from the left wing. On the right, Brazilian international Antony is not up for discussion. So for Dusan Tadic, the captain, only the striker position remains. But Schreuder has a better alternative for this with Brian Brobbey,” he noted in The Telegraph. Kieft would therefore actually position Brobbey above Tadic in the point of the attack.

However, Kieft does not think that it is actually a realistic scenario that the twenty-year-old striker is preferred over Tadic. “That seems unthinkable. As a trainer you can hide behind the fact that there are an awful lot of matches to play in a short time, but that does not get you away from someone like Tadic. As a proud Serb, he is not someone who will easily settle for a second place. Not even as he gets older.” Tadic has played almost everything for Ajax in recent seasons. In 194 official games for the team from Amsterdam, he scored 91 goals, and provided the same number of assists.

Defensively, Kieft is mainly concerned about the balance. “Offensively it looked good, but defensively the balance was completely lost. Even with the Mexican Edson Alvarez right in front of the defense.” He does not want to speak too loudly about newcomer Calvin Bassey. “It all looks quite wild and uncontrolled at the ball. Bassey seems destined for the central duo and that would benefit the defensive balance at Ajax. Blind and Wijndal will then have to fight it out on the left back position.”
