Olivier Giroud faces his last matches as an international for France. The French striker will say goodbye after the European Championship, he has announced L'Équipe. Giroud is the all-time top scorer for the French national team with 57 international goals.

“I've always said I would stop if my body asked me to,” says Giroud. “I think I still have two good years. But as far as the French team is concerned, this will be the end.”

During the European Championship, France is in the group with the Dutch team, among others. The two countries will meet on June 21. In the run-up to the European Championship, Didier Deschamps' team is still practicing against Luxembourg and Canada.

Giroud has a clear reason for his retirement. “We have to make room for the young players,” said the striker. In a club context, Giroud has not yet closed the book. He will switch from AC Milan to Los Angeles FC this summer.

Giroud scored his first international goal in February 2012, during his third match for the French national team. The counter now stands at 57 goals and he is the all-time top scorer Les Bleus. Number two Thierry Henry has 51 goals.

The question is how long Giroud will remain on the throne with the national team. Kylian Mbappé is fast approaching. The star player of the new generation, only 25 years old, already has 46 international goals.

In addition to the world title in 2018, Giroud also won silver twice with the French team: during the European Championships in 2016 and the World Cup in 2022. More than a year ago, Lionel Messi's Argentina proved too strong in the final in Qatar.
