Erik ten Hag and Wout Weghorst have to pay the price after Manchester United’s 7-0 defeat at Liverpool. The Mancunians went from heaven to hell within a week and were put back on the ground by Jürgen Klopp’s team after the European victory over Barcelona and the win of the EFL Cup. English TV icon Richard Keys is shocked by the level and calls Weghorst ‘the worst player he has ever seen at United’.
Keys does not limit himself to the strong criticism of Weghorst and has also come up with a new nickname for Ten Hag: Seven Hag. The former sports presenter for the BBC, ITV, Sky Sports and ESPN accuses Ten Hag of distancing himself from blame for the loss. “Now comes the real test,” Keys said in his blog on his own website. “How does United react? It seems that Ten Hag is very keen to take credit when things go well, but it is always someone else’s fault when things don’t go well. This time his players were unprofessional and did not comply plan. In other words, don’t blame me.”
Keys would have preferred to hear Ten Hag say it was a one-off. “He should have said it will not happen again and the work done so far has not been in vain,” the former reporter continues. “That would have been enough. Take the loss collectively. Instead, he’s complaining that United didn’t stick together. He distances himself from it.” After the rant in the direction of Ten Hag, it is Weghorst’s turn, who in Keys’ eyes also does not make the best turn so far.
“It is Ten Hag’s decision to let Weghorst play. It is not Weghorst’s fault. But he must be the worst player I have ever seen in a United shirt,” Keys is deadly. “He’s an ordinary number 9 who can’t keep up with a struggling team like Burnley. What’s the matter Seven Hag to think he’s a lavish number 10? Come on. It’s a joke and the manager needs to stop pretending Weghorst has anything to offer. He doesn’t sprint because he can’t run and he doesn’t score goals. You can’t start with him.”
