Valentijn Driessen is not pleased with the way Ajax treats Wesley Sneijder. The record international of the Dutch seemed almost certain to get a position within the technical staff of Maurice Steijn, but on Tuesday evening Sneijder himself suddenly announced that the talks had been stopped by Ajax. Incomprehensible, says Driessen.

“I think it’s sad news, especially for Wesley Sneijder himself, our record international,” Driessen said in a video item from Wednesday evening. The Telegraph. “The man has a lot of experience, a lot of knowledge about football and he talks sensibly about football. If you can include someone like him in your city, then of course you should always do it. Why those talks have been halted is not clear at this time; no one comes out for a good reason.”

“Then it becomes guesswork. Maybe something happened? Could Steijn have been whistled back by Mislintat?” the journalist continues. “It is very remarkable, because Steijn wanted Sneijder on his staff at Sparta. Now he said again that he would love to have Sneijder there. Even after it became known that the talks between Sneijder and Ajax have stopped, Steijn said again that they would certainly come back to it. Then you do wonder how things are exactly in Amsterdam. It’s a great mystery.”

“Normally there is always room for former Ajax players, and certainly for a former Ajax player like Sneijder, to warm up in the organisation. You have to give him that space. This gets Sneijder like a boomerang in his neck and that does not belong to Ajax. I think that Sneijder is being wronged in that respect. The Ajax DNA is increasingly disappearing from the club. If you can bring in someone like Sneijder, then that is simply an added value. It’s a very strange turn of events; there is no rope to tie. There is no policy at all,” said Driessen, who is not critical of the Ajax management for the first time this transfer summer.
