Jesse Lingard appears to be leaving Manchester United on a free transfer after this season. According to the BBC Negotiations for a new contract have broken down. The attacking midfielder is no longer interested in new talks and would even like to leave on a rental basis in January. The 28-year-old Lingard has been playing with . since he was seven the Red Devils.

Manchester United would have liked to extend Lingard’s contract, partly because he made a big impression on a rental basis at West Ham United last season. Last summer, the clubs lined up to take him over; six clubs showed concrete interest. However, Lingard chose to take his chance under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, Lingard has only appeared in the starting lineup once so far this season. After the lost League Cup match against West Ham United in September, Lingard was no longer in the starting position.

This season, Lingard came on as a substitute only seven times in all competitions, with a total of 76 minutes played. His supporting role at Manchester United has resulted in him losing his place in the England national team. According to English media, Lingard, like Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek, is among the players who are surprised by Solskjaer’s decision to stick to his regular base players despite disappointing performances.

Lingard seems to want to leave Manchester United in January anyway. During the international match in October, he indicated that he wants to play regularly with a view to his chances with the national team. He wants to go to the World Cup in Qatar with England and without playing time that seems a utopia, the international realizes. Manchester United resume the Premier League against Watford on Saturday, after which the Champions League game against Villarreal is scheduled for Tuesday.
