The English Football Association (FA) is currently looking at a suspicious yellow card from Granit Xhaka, it reveals The Times. The Athletic reported last week that an unnamed Arsenal player may be involved in match fixing. Now it becomes clear that a yellow card from Xhaka during the away game against Leeds United (1-4 win) has attracted the attention of the FA.

It was reported last week that according to various reports from betting shops, disproportionate bets had been placed on a yellow card during an Arsenal Premier League game. The identity of the suspect was The Athletic known, but his name was not disclosed in consultation. The Times does now: according to the British quality newspaper, it concerns Xhaka, who would have received the suspected yellow card during the game against Leeds United on December 18.

Xhaka was shown a yellow card for time-wasting at Elland Road 86 minutes into the game after hesitating to take a free kick at 1-4. An amount of 52,000 pounds – converted 62,000 euros – would have been bet on a yellow card for Xhaka. The Sun reported that the yellow card subsequently yielded a total amount of 250,000 pounds (299,000 euros).

Betting on the details of sporting events, such as yellow cards, is a form of betting known as spot fixing. A rare phenomenon in England, according to reports because of the ‘high salaries’. In the Netherlands, Tom Beugelsdijk was discredited last season for a similar case, although the defender denies involvement in match fixing.

Sources at the FA indicate opposite The Times to be aware that there are currently no indications that Xhaka or any other Arsenal players are knowingly involved. The details are currently being looked into before a decision is made on a formal investigation. Arsenal are refusing to comment officially for the time being, but sources around the club have told the newspaper that the club has been assured that no players are suspected or accused.
