Timo Werner has to miss the World Cup in Qatar. The 26-year-old striker was injured early on Wednesday evening in RB Leipzig’s Champions League match with Shakhtar Donetsk (0-4 win). His club reports on Thursday that investigations have shown that Werner has suffered a tear in his ankle, which means that he will be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Werner had to be replaced by Shakhtar in the nineteenth minute after being injured as a result of a tackle by Taras Stepanenko. After the game, it seemed to be not too bad, according to Leipzig coach Marco Rose. “He was in pain, but it needs to be examined more closely. The doctor says it doesn’t appear to be anything serious,” said the trainer on Wednesday evening.

However, a scan showed that there is indeed a serious injury, which means that Werner has to put a line through the World Cup with Germany. There was a good possibility that national coach Hansi Flick would have selected him, as the 55-time international was pre-selected for Germany and has appeared in all international matches so far this calendar year, mostly as a starting player.

Germany will start the World Cup on Wednesday, November 23, with a game against Japan. Four days later, the squatter against Spain is scheduled, after which the Germans take on Costa Rica in the last group match on December 1. Of course, Leipzig will also have to do without Werner in the coming months. Those Roten Bullen before the winter break in the Bundesliga, they will meet TSG Hoffenheim, SC Freiburg and Werder Bremen.
