Sergiño Dest currently has to make do with a supporting role at AC Milan and Rafael van der Vaart understands that. According to the analyst and former football player, the right back of I Rossoneric unpopular in the locker room, as he would overestimate his own qualities. Van der Vaart uses images of Dest, which show that he takes his actions too far, as an example.
Dest watched on Wednesday evening as Milan reached the eighth final of the Champions League by simply dealing with Red Bull Salzburg (4-0). However, playing time was not in it for the American international and prior to the match, Van der Vaart already understood why. “We often talk about the wrong choice in terms of club, but you know what he has a little bit? He can be very good, but he always takes too much on his fork.”
Van der Vaart supports this opinion with images showing that the right back loses the ball after a long action. “He thinks he is much better and further than he actually is. He is fast and has good technique, but defending is his first job and then you have to be a bit smart. You really don’t make yourself popular with this in the dressing room and it’s a quality to know what you can and can’t do. Even the best players in the world have that.”
So far, Dest has only made eight official appearances for AC Milan. In total he was allocated 341 playing minutes, in which the former right back of Ajax did not provide any assists and did not score. The Italian top club rents Dest from Barcelona, where he no longer had a future under Xavi. The contract of the Almere-born wing defender at Barça runs until mid-2025, but Milan negotiated an option to buy last summer.
