SC Heerenveen may have to deal with a departure from Joey Veerman a week before the close of the transfer market. Football International reports on Monday afternoon of Southampton’s concrete interest in the midfielder. In addition to the interest from England, there is also a Spanish club in the market for the 21-year-old midfielder.

The Saints Veerman, who at an earlier stage was also mentioned at Feyenoord, have been targeting for a long time, according to reports from the weekly. Scouts of the mid-engine from the Premier League sat in front of the midfielder in the stands during the game against VVV-Venlo last Saturday and saw Veerman account for the only goal of the game.

Southampton has reportedly expressed its interest to Heerenveen, that if it does indeed come from a departure, the ‘main prize’ will ask for Veerman. The midfielder is still stuck in the Abe Lenstra Stadium until mid-2024 and is not necessarily looking for a departure. The plan was initially to let Veerman play in Friesland for another year and then let him take the next step.

Football International adds that Veerman does not intend to miss a ‘unique opportunity’. It remains to be seen whether Heerenveen and Southampton will find each other in the coming days regarding a transfer fee for Veerman. The transfer market closes next Monday, October 5.
