PSV suffered a defeat at FC Emmen on Tuesday evening. Ruud van Nistelrooij’s team played just over a half with ten men due to a red card for Mauro Júnior, who gave a death kick to Rui Mendes, and was unable to produce a goal. FC Emmen succeeded in doing so through Lucas Bernadou, who gave the home team the much-needed three points with a sixteen-meter shot: 1-0. PSV remains third, but can be overtaken midweek by FC Twente and Ajax. Emmen leaves the relegation zone and is now fifteenth.

Mauro Júnior was out for seven months due to a lingering knee injury and returned to PS in the Eredivisie on Tuesday. Luuk de Jong, who fell against Vitesse (1-0 win) with a head injury, was replaced in the striker position by Anwar El Ghazi. Joey Veerman again started on the bench and came in fifteen minutes before the end. FC Emmen again took office without Oussama Darfalou. The striker who was taken on a free transfer in January for extra goals was not yet eligible to play and was sitting in the stands.

The first big chance of the game was after fifteen minutes for PSV, which seemed to be off to a good start. Johan Bakayoko was launched over the right thanks to a great through ball from Xavi Simons, but his weak shot was deflected by Mickey van der Hart. The first shot that Emmen received between the goal posts immediately resulted in a goal in the 24th minute. The falling ball from a corner kick came at the feet of Bernadou, who was able to take it freely and shot hard and low from sixteen meters: 1-0.

PSV took the initiative in the final phase of the first half, but barely managed to become dangerous. To make matters worse for the Eindhoven team, Mauro received a direct red card just before half-time. The left back launched a rash flying tackle and landed high on the lower leg of Rui Mendes, who was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

The injured Portuguese was replaced by Ole Romeny, who spoiled the chance of Emmen’s second goal ten minutes after the break. The Emmen striker was able to head in freely after an excellent cross from Julius Dirksen, but remarkably enough saw PSV goalkeeper Walter Benítez save with his head. A short time later, a nice free kick from Emmen captain Jeroen Veldmate hit the crossbar. PSV thus retained the prospect of a result and started an offensive just before time. This resulted in a very threatening moment in stoppage time, when Simons headed the ball back into the goal mouth from a Phillipp Mwene cross. El Ghazi fell short to walk in the ball.
