RB Leipzig has pushed Schalke 04 even further towards the abyss. The team of trainer Marco Rose was 1-6 too strong for Schalke in Gelsenkirchen, which is desolately last in the Bundesliga with nine points from seventeen games. Thanks to the victory in the Veltins Arena, Leipzig takes over second place from Eintracht Frankfurt, which will also play against SC Freiburg on Wednesday evening.
It only took seven minutes for Leipzig to shoot the ball behind goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow for the first time. Portuguese striker André Silva picked up the ball halfway through Schalke’s half and was then able to easily run through to the sixteen-meter area, after which he fired the ball into the bottom left of the goal. A few minutes later, Leipzig already managed to double the score. Right wing defender Benjamin Henrichs completed a nice attack with a hard shot in the left corner: 0-2.
The first half seemed to end in 0-2, until in the 44th minute Schalke, after high pressure from Leipzig, handed the ball deep into their own half. Dani Olmo pressed, but his shot was deflected by the Schalke goalkeeper. In the second instance, André Silva was just not offside and he shot in cold-bloodedly: 0-3. That also did not become the rest position. In the stoppage time of the first half, Timo Werner completed a low cross from Olmo, sending the teams into the locker room with the score 0-4.
Schalke came out of the dressing room a lot better in the second half. Soichuro Kozuki launched himself with his assumption and immediately came face to face with Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich. Blaswich, who played for Heracles between 2018 and 2022, was unable to turn the ball and saw the ball disappear over his foot in the bottom right corner of the goal: 1-4. Ten minutes before the end, Olmo scored the best goal of the match. He pinned the ball from the side of the sixteen-meter area over the keeper: 1-5. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen also contributed in the last minute. He placed the ball with a curve behind the keeper and decided the final score at 1-6.
