Liverpool booked their third win in a week on Saturday afternoon. Thanks in part to a double by Darwin Núñez, there was a 3-1 win over Southampton at Anfield. The final score was already on the scoreboard at halftime. The win moves Liverpool to sixth place, although Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion have played one game less.

Former NEC coach Pepijn Lijnders took over the honors at Liverpool against Southampton. Klopp was sent off last month with a red card against Manchester City (1-0 win) and received a match suspension on appeal. At Southampton, Nathan Jones was in charge for the first time The Saints. Southampton decided to evict Ralph Hasenhuttl last weekend due to continued poor results.

The spectators at Anfield were presented with an exciting opening phase. Roberto Firmino managed to break the spell for the home team after six minutes. The Brazilian headed in a free kick from Andrew Robertson from 13 meters in: 1-0. Long could the Reds didn’t enjoy the quick lead, however, as Southampton tied the score again from a standard situation on the other side. Alisson unnecessarily saved his goal with a free kick by James-Ward Prowse, allowing Ché Adams to head in easily: 1-1.

Jones was unable to solve the defensive problems in his first game as head coach of Southampton, as Liverpool created chance after chance. The new lead for the Lijnders team was inevitable and it came after twenty minutes. Harvey Elliott found Núñez behind the visitors’ defense with a nice cross ball, after which the Uruguayan could simply tap in: 2-1. The margin was increased by Núñez on the stroke of half-time, after the attacker got the ball on a silver platter from Robertson.

In the second act, Southampton came out of his shell more. Unlike his defense, Alisson was on the alert a few times. The Brazilian closing post first stopped Mohamed Elyounoussi from scoring and then had an excellent reflex on a header by Adams. Virgil van Dijk was still close to 4-1 in injury time, but the the Dutch international saw his header go just wide.
