Real Sociedad and Barcelona are negotiating a transfer from Memphis Depay, reports Mundo Deportivo Saturday morning. The 28-year-old attacker saw a transfer to Juventus stall, but Barca hope to discharge him this week. A domestic transfer in LaLiga could now lead to the exodus of Memphis.
Sociedad sold Alexander Isak on Friday for seventy million euros to Newcastle United and sees Memphis as the ideal successor to the Swedish striker. Part of the millions that the club received for Isak is therefore reserved for a transfer of the star player of the Dutch. Barcelona is disappointed that Memphis is still under contract and is happy to cooperate with the transfer. Juventus chose this week to go for Arkadiusz Milik, which means that Memphis no longer seems to be an option for the Turin club.
At an earlier stage, Memphis reportedly hinted in the Barcelona dressing room that he was not keen on a departure from the club. He would only want to leave Barca for an absolute top club that plays in the Champions League. Sociedad will play Europa League football in the coming season, but given the small chance of playing time at Barcelona, the Spanish newspaper thinks the club still has a chance. Memphis would like to build up race rhythm for the World Cup in Qatar.
Sociedad could become the fifth club Depay plays for. The flamboyant right leg made his debut for PSV in 2012, where he scored fifty times in 123 official matches. In addition, Depay gave 29 assists. Manchester United took him over from the Eindhoven team in July 2015 for 34 million euros. In England, the the Dutch international never really left his mark, after which he left for Olympique Lyon. After five good years in France, Depay was taken to Barça by Ronald Koeman last summer. He scored 12 goals in his first season in La Liga.
