Marcel Brands has rejected an offer from the KNVB to succeed the departing Nico-Jan Hoogma, it reports. General Newspaper Tuesday. Toon Gerbrands’ successor had the opportunity to start as director of top football at the football association, but preferred a return to PSV. Brands will become the new general manager of the Eindhoven team after this season.

The name of Brands quickly came up in the rumor circuit when Hoogma announced in November last year that he would leave in the summer. Brands previously worked as a technical director at AZ and PSV, before making the switch to Everton in 2018. At the English club, he decided in December to leave with immediate effect despite a contract running until mid-2024 due to a “clear difference in the club’s vision and direction for the future”.

It General Newspaper knows that Brands was then asked by the KNVB to succeed Hoogma, but he rejected that offer. “I have indicated to the PSV Supervisory Board that there is only one club in the Netherlands where I want to work,” Brands said on Monday when he was appointed as general manager. “PSV has a strong foundation and there is a balanced management team. As general manager I hope to add value and be successful here again.”

Brands will therefore return in the summer to the club that he served as technical director between 2010 and 2018. His first important task, together with John de Jong, will be the appointment of a new trainer, as Roger Schmidt has indicated that he will leave PSV after this season. The aforementioned newspaper drops the names of Marco Silva (Fulham trainer) and Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid), with whom Brands worked at Everton. Peter Bosz is also seen as a candidate to succeed Schmidt. Bosz is still working at Olympique Lyon.
