Leicester City has also had excellent business in the Premier League four days after reaching the FA Cup final. The team of manager Brendan Rodgers quickly finished in-house on Thursday with West Bromwich Albion, which scored no fewer than three goals in the first half in thirteen minutes: 3-0. With the win, Leicester City takes a step closer to a Champions League ticket.
West Bromwich Albion kept pace with Leicester City for more than twenty minutes, which had lost the last two league matches, but after that it became clear to the team of Sam Allardyce that it was not a game to score points against relegation to the Championship. After some nice preparatory work by Timothy Castagne, Jamie Vardy worked the ball behind goalkeeper Sam Johnstone after 23 minutes: 1-0. For the attacker it was only his first goal after having been dry for no less than twelve games. His worst run since December 2016, when he failed to score sixteen games in a row.
A few minutes later, Jonny Evans put the 2-0 against his ex-employer on the scoreboard with a powerful header. A bet by Castagne on the post heralded the 3-0 in the 36th minute. After a good action from Vardy on the left, Kelechi Iheanacho aimed the ball from close range behind Johnstone. The satisfaction showed on Rodgers’ face. He feared that the FA Cup semi-final efforts against Southampton (1-0) would prevent a good result against the WBA.
In the second half, Leicester City was less sharp in the last meters and the urge to move forward disappeared as the final signal came into view. Vardy and Iheanacho missed chances for a bigger victory. Leicester now has, with six match days to go, four points more than Chelsea and West Ham United, the numbers four and five in the rankings. Another home game awaits next Monday, when Crystal Palace comes to the King Power Stadium.
