Chances are small that John Heitinga will return as trainer of Jong Ajax, Michel Kreek said after the game of the reserves team against Helmond Sport (1-1). Heitinga has been moved on by Ajax’s club management as an interim coach after the dismissal of Alfred Schreuder and will be on the bench as the person with ultimate responsibility in the away match against Excelsior on Sunday. Kreek in turn does the honors at Jong Ajax.

It was a surprise to many who would get off the bus at Jong Ajax on Friday evening as the person with ultimate responsibility for the U21 team. It turned out to be Kreek, who is allowed to lead the talent team for the time being due to the passing of Heitinga. Under the leadership of Kreek, a hard-fought point was scored on a visit to Helmond. Young Ajax took the lead through Christian Rasmussen, but Peter van Ooijen soon equalized the score.

Afterwards, Kreek went in front of the camera ESPN briefly on the situation at Ajax. “I think it was indicated in the press release that John has been transferred to the staff of the first team, so that is clear,” said the 52-year-old coach. “Unfortunately we have had to deal with such moments more often. You don’t want it, but unfortunately it sometimes happens in football. It is up to the club how they interpret that. There are many stories on the internet, but I will not go there anymore say about.”

Kreek describes the current situation as ‘turbulent’. On Thursday evening he saw how the club management broke with Schreuder. His assistant Matthias Kaltenbach also has to leave the field. Until a new trainer is found, fate lies in the hands of Heitinga. On Friday evening, Ajax announced that the run-out training was led by the former defender. He will also be on the bench on Sunday as ultimately responsible if Ajax hopes to win again in the Eredivisie for the first time since October 22.
