Marcelo Gallardo is one of the top candidates to become Ajax’s new trainer. That writes the Argentinian TyC Sports. The 46-year-old coach has been free since his departure from River Plate, where he decided to take a temporary break last summer after eight years. Gallardo is reportedly eager for a chance at a European club.

The former midfielder won no fewer than fourteen prizes as a River Plate trainer between 2014 and 2022. In October, however, he announced his intention to take a short break once his contract expired at the end of December. Gallardo’s explanation was that he was ready for a new challenge and wanted to start it full of energy. Whether Ajax can already seduce him from his recess, however, is the question.

What will Ajax do: Van Gaal, Slot, Bosz or a foreigner?

According to TyC Sports Gallardo is ‘one of the most important candidates’ to succeed the dismissed Alfred Schreuder in Amsterdam. The latter was sacked last Thursday after the umpteenth loss of points in a row. Ajax is thus in fifth place in the Eredivisie ranking, seven points behind leader Feyenoord. With sixteen rounds to go, it does not seem an impossible task to still win the national title and Gallardo is considered the right person to lead the team from Amsterdam in that quest.

The Argentinian is one of many candidates associated with Schreuder’s succession. For example, the names of the two unemployed Peter Bosz and Louis van Gaal are among the names that are buzzing around in the corridors. Ajax was already in trouble with Croatian national coach Zlatko Dalic, it was revealed The Telegraph Friday. After the dismissal of Schreuder, John Heitinga temporarily takes over as trainer and will also be on the bench next Sunday.
