Olympique Marseille experienced a pitch-black evening on Wednesday evening around the away game against Angers SCO. Apart from the fact that the team was stuck at a 0-0 draw, supporters riots broke out again. To make matters worse, a 23-year-old supporter died on his way home when the minivan he was traveling in was involved in a serious accident. Eight other occupants of the minibus were injured in the accident France Blue.

The victim, a 23-year-old French supporter of Marseille, was on board one of four minibuses that took a group of supporters together to the away game against Angers. The accident happened when the van in which the supporters were sitting crashed into the back of a truck. Emergency services were quickly on the scene and spent three hours at the scene of the accident, but were unable to do anything for the twenty-something. The eight injured were taken to hospital overnight.

RMC Sports added that Merseille players and President Pablo Longoria were informed of the tragic accident upon their return to the airport. The death of the Marseille fan put a dark black edge to an already unpleasant evening for the club from the south of France. Earlier in the evening, after the final whistle against Angers, supporters climbed the gates of the away section to confront fans of the home side. Stewards and security staff had their hands full to prevent a scuffle between the two supporter groups.

The stadium speaker decided to address the fans desperately. “Please, please, what’s the point of this? Please calm down.” Earlier in the evening, at least sixteen supporters of Girondins de Bordeaux were injured when they were attacked by supporters of Montpellier. This happened when the bus came to a stop at a roundabout. The fifty Montpellier supporters stormed the bus, beating steel pipes and throwing smoke bombs. It is the umpteenth incident in the French Ligue 1 this season. Earlier things went horribly wrong at the OGC Nice – Marseille and RC Lens – Lille OSC matches.
