Ron Vlaar looks back on his football career with a satisfied feeling, the former defender says in an interview with The Telegraph. Due to persistent injuries, he recently decided to immediately end his career, in which he played for AZ, Feyenoord and Aston Villa. Vlaar does not care that transfers to Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur were canceled.

At the end of 2005, Vlaar was in the serious interest of Ajax. AZ did not come out financially with the team from Amsterdam and so the switch was discontinued. He eventually left a year later for 2.5 million euros for Feyenoord. At the time, Tottenham Hotspur was also interested and that interest started again in 2014, when Southampton also had his eye on him. However, it did not come to a switch for the then defender of Aston Villa.

“I am proud that I have played for AZ, Feyenoord and Aston Villa for a long time, so that I have been able to build something great everywhere. And no, I do not regret that transfers to Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur did not go ahead ”, Vlaar said in the newspaper. “My time at Feyenoord has shaped me, partly because of my injuries, and made me who I am. I am grateful for that. The club has supported me during the times when I was struggling, even extending my contract during rehabilitation. ”

The 36-year-old Vlaar, good for 32 international matches in the shirt of the Dutch national team, said he played for the Dutch with the best players. “But at club level I was in one team at Aston Villa with Jack Grealish. He was very young, but you could see that he was an enormous talent. He is now one of the stars of the Premier League, ”said Vlaar, who briefly experienced Shinji Ono at Feyenoord. “It was not normally good. And as a defender I think Stefan de Vrij is a great man. It is not without reason that he was the best defender of Serie A last season. I think that is really great for him. ”
