Gianni Infantino has shown his worst side. The president of the world football association FIFA attended the vigil for the late Pele and drew attention to his person by taking selfies with those present next to the open coffin of the Brazilian football legend. That has brought him a lot of criticism.

Pelé’s open coffin stood in the center of the Santos stadium, where people could pay their last respects to the Brazilian during a vigil. Infantino was one of thousands in attendance at the public ceremony, but was spotted posing right next to the coffin for photos with other visitors. He also took selfies with guests. That led to a storm of online criticism for the president of FIFA. The word ‘shame’ was often used and one Twitterer wondered ‘what’s wrong with this man’.

Earlier, Infantino spoke with Marcia Aoki, Pelé’s widow and eldest son Edinho. The Swiss noted, among other things, that every country in the world should name a football stadium after the Brazilian and also paid his respect. “Pelé is forever. He is a global icon for football and all generations to come should know and remember who this man was and what he meant. The sadness is immense.”

Pelé died of colon cancer on December 29 of last year at the age of 82. The Brazilian is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He became world champion three times with Brazil, is still the all-time top scorer for the national team and also scored a truckload of goals for his club Santos. Oh Reiwho was known for referring to herself in the third person, was married three times and leaves several children.
