Gaston Sporre has died at the age of 76, his former club PEC Zwolle reported on Sunday afternoon. The former president of the Eredivisie club had been ill for some time. A minute of silence was observed before the home game against Feyenoord and both teams will wear mourning bands on Sunday. “PEC Zwolle wishes the family, friends and all relatives of Gaston a lot of strength to bear this loss,” the club writes.

Sporre was chairman of the then FC Zwolle from 1989 to 1998. After the rescue of the club, Gaston, as an experienced organizational consultant, led the further development of FC Zwolle during these nine years with great passion and commitment. “In this way he laid the foundation for the current football club that PEC Zwolle is today. In the years after his departure as chairman, he remained a loyal ambassador and prominent figurehead of the club.”

After that, Sporre was mainly active in business, but he returned to football for five months in 2013 as interim director of sc Heerenveen. He was also the supervisor of RTV Oost for eighteen years, of which twelve years as chairman. From 2008 to 2014 he was chairman of the East Netherlands Chamber of Commerce. He was also involved as a supervisor at, among others, Waste Energy Company Amsterdam, Museum de Fundatie, Bas van de Goor Fundatie and Intermezzo Aftercare Center for Cancer Patients (Isala Zwolle).
