After a run of six games, each with at least one goal against, Joël Drommel finally kept his goal clean at PSV on Sunday. The goalkeeper had two sublime saves against FC Utrecht (0-1 victory), allowing the Eindhoven team to take important points in the battle for the national title. The difficult period certainly did something to the usually sober Drommel, he says afterwards in conversation with Hans Kraay junior.

“Two important saves, two very important saves. I assume you know which one I mean”, Kraay explains to Drommel in the interview of ESPN† “Remco Balk”, answers the outstanding PSV goalkeeper. “And a header from Mike van der Hoorn”, Kraay junior adds right away. “And I think you make the 0-1 fairly quickly in the transition.” Drommel is happy that he was able to help his team, after he regularly had to deal with criticism this season. “That’s positive for once.” The reporter then wants to know how much Drommel yearned for a good performance under the bar at PSV.

Joël Drommel had some very important saves for PSV against FC Utrecht.

“Because you’re not going to tell me that it hasn’t done anything for you lately?” Kraay junior raises. “No, of course not. You really strive for this every day, you live for it. You do everything you can to be important to the team. And now finally today is working out well, but I’ve been waiting for it for a long time.” Despite the various setbacks, there were never any doubts at Drommel. “No, I never doubt. And I am someone who is hard on himself, very critical too. And work hard, keep fighting and never give up. And then it will come naturally.”

“The only thing you have to think is that you have to be there again next time”, emphasizes the combative Drommel after the three-pointer in De Galgenwaard. “And that you are going to do better and also want to do it. You really shouldn’t hesitate, that’s something you really shouldn’t do. Certainly not a keeper. And you just have to keep believing in yourself. Keep working hard, training with the the right people around you, talk well, and work on the things that could be done better.” Kraay junior is curious about the points for improvement at Drommel. “Taking balls, making the right choices, the position in the goal. There are plenty of things I can still grow in. High balls too, in the sixteen meters I have to be more ruthless.”

“I had that more at FC Twente, but it is very different at PSV. At Twente I got 40 balls and here maybe only 2, and then you have to stand there. But you only learn from that and you also grow in it. “, adds Drommel to his analysis about the differences between his old club and PSV. Finally, Kraay junior asks whether the closing post is relieved after the victory in Utrecht. “Yes, now just forward to next Thursday (against FC Copenhagen, ed.). And hopefully we will stay in the Conference League,” said Drommel.

Cristian Willaert thinks it’s a ‘very nice interview’ between Drommel and Kraay junior. “Because this boy is not doing very well in front of the camera after a well-kept match. He is just honest”, the reporter from De Galgenwaard gives a compliment to Drommel. “This is exactly what we said at halftime. There is so much tension and people at home may not notice that and they see the mistakes and a keeper who is not good enough for PSV,” adds analyst Marciano Vink. “I think all the negative moments he has experienced and the criticism that has come from outside. They stick on his fragile self-confidence. And you forget the good moments too quickly, because you are afraid of making a mistake again. that lingers.”
