Feyenoord has found an opponent for the traditional opening game for the new season, the club reports on Tuesday evening. A week before the start of the competition, Arne Slot’s team will take on Atlético Madrid. The duel with the national champions of Spain starts on Sunday, August 8 at 5 PM.

For Atlético, the duel with Feyenoord is the last test before the start of a new season in LaLiga. On Sunday, August 15, Diego Simeone’s team opens with an away match against Celta de Vigo. Feyenoord will also start a week later with an away match against Willem II. For Slot’s team, however, the season has already officially started with the diptych against FC Drita in the second preliminary round of the Conference League.

Feyenoord has often played against Spanish clubs in the traditional opening game in recent years. For example, clubs such as Valencia, Real Sociedad and Levante have come to De Kuip in recent years, although Southampton was the opponent in 2019. Last season, there was no opening game in Rotterdam.
