Georginio Wijnaldum seems to be on his way to the Liverpool exit. The Liverpool Echo writes that the reigning champion of England has no intention of meeting the thirty-year-old midfielder’s demands in the negotiations to renew his expiring commitment. The regional English newspaper states that Liverpool wants to avoid a ‘Mesut Özil blunder’ and therefore does not intend to increase the supply.

Arsenal extended Ozil’s contract in 2018 until mid-2021. Partly because the Gunners Rather forced by his contractual situation to part with Alexis Sánchez, Ozil’s exorbitant demands were met. The German attacking midfielder, however, fell out of favor and did not play a game in the first half of this season, while he earned a week’s salary of around 400,000 euros. He eventually left for Fenerbahçe on a free transfer in January, which also meant that Arsenal suffered a huge loss on the transfer fee of 63 million euros paid to Real Madrid in 2013.

Liverpool wants to avoid such a scenario and therefore does not intend to comply with Wijnaldum’s demands. The the Dutch-international is reportedly keen to see appreciation back in Liverpool’s contract offer, which also means an increase in his weekly salary of 104,000 euros. The Reds have no intention of increasing this amount and the contract offer that Liverpool made months ago is said to have been received ‘lukewarm’ by his entourage. It is stressed that Liverpool do not have the wealth of Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea and therefore have to be careful with the budget.

The Liverpool Echo also writes that Liverpool think a four-year contract extension is too long for a player ‘who will not get better’. It is therefore obvious that Wijnaldum will leave on a transfer-free basis at the end of the season, unless one of the two parties is still willing to add water to the wine. Wijnaldum has recently been linked to Paris Saint-Germain, Internazionale and Barcelona and has been officially allowed to negotiate with other clubs since January. The midfielder has played 27.5 million euros in 230 appearances for Liverpool since joining Newcastle United in 2016, scoring 22 goals and 16 assists.
