Austria won the friendly match against Italy on Sunday evening. The home team was 2-0 too strong in Wien thanks to a goal from Xaver Schlager and an absolute world goal from David Alaba. The captain shot a free kick from more than 25 meters hard into the intersection.

National coach Ralf Rangnick, who was attacked several times last week in Cristiano Ronaldo’s much-discussed interview with Piers Morgan, had to do without Gernot Trauner. The Feyenoord player had problems with his hip and was therefore forced to miss the duel with Italy. Alaba was of course in the starting line-up, just like ex-Eredivisie players Maximilian Wöber and Marko Arnautovic. Ajax player Florian Grillitsch sat on the couch.

It took only five minutes for Austria to take the lead. Marco Verratti suffered a careless loss of possession in midfield, after which Arnautovic was able to counterattack. The striker bridged dozens of meters, saw Schlager coming up from the right and passed the ball at exactly the right speed. The RB Leipzig midfielder was able to pass Gianluigi Donnarumma with a counterattacking shot: 1-0. Italy, which enjoyed most of the ball possession but was unable to convert it into opportunities played out, had to accept the second goal half an hour later.

Alaba claimed a free kick from over 25 meters, took a long run-up and shot the ball hard into the right intersection. Donnarumma tried to get his hand against it, but only heard the ball fly past: 2-0. Alaba, who played his 97th international match for Austria on Sunday evening, made his third goal of the season. Roberto Mancini brought in Nicolò Zaniolo and Federico Chiesa, among others, in the second half, but the tying goal was no longer made.
