Girona is still without a defeat after the sixth round in LaLiga. Coach Michel’s team won 5-3 against RCD Mallorca on Saturday afternoon after an early deficit. Former PSV player Sávio took a leading role with an assist and a goal, while Daley Blind was important with an assist for the important equalizer. Girona (16 points) is the very surprising new leader in LaLiga, although Real Madrid (15) and FC Barcelona (13) still have a game in hand.

The afternoon started disappointingly for Girona. Viktor Tsygankov received a ball against his hand in his own sixteen, causing the referee to put the ball on the spot. Vedat Muriqi sent goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga into the wrong corner: 0-1. Yet Girona managed to completely reverse the deficit before half time. First of all, Blind seemed to be able to shoot in from a free kick, but a sea of defenders in front of him prevented that. The left foot played to fellow defender David López, who had the necessary freedom: 1-1. It turned out to be a very redeeming equalizer, because almost ten minutes later it was 2-1.

After a foul in the box by Samu Costa, Girona also received a penalty, which was converted by Artem Dovbyk. Girona was then completely loose. In minute 37, Sávio made a magic move on the left side and sent his direct opponent into the woods. The quick Brazilian gave a sharp lead and Ivan Martín gratefully took advantage of it: 3-1. Just before half time, the home team’s fourth goal was also a fact. A smooth attack could not be completed, but the falling ball ended up with Yangel Herrera. The Venezuelan created some space for himself and found the far corner flawlessly: 4-1.

If there was still a glimmer of hope for a good result in Mallorca, it disappeared ten minutes after the break. Sávio played in Dovbyk, after which the Ukrainian gave a perfect pass back to the Brazilian. Face-to-face with goalie Predrag Rajkovic, Sávio did not disappoint: 5-1. Sávio was taken off fifteen minutes before the end, while Blind would play out the entire match. The Dutch international had to watch as Mallorca scored twice more. Abdón Prats first took full advantage of Girona’s weak clearance from close range. The attacker scored again deep into injury time, this time via a powerful header: 5-3. Barcelona will play against Celta de Vigo later on Saturday, while Real Madrid will take on city rivals Atlético on Sunday.
