Cody Gakpo remains the main target of Leeds United, assures Fabrizio Romano. The Premier League club is guaranteed to return to the 23-year-old PSV attacker in January, who decided at the very last minute on Deadline Day to stay in Eindhoven. “Leeds are ready to push again for Gakpo in January,” said Romano.

Romano looks back at the events of Thursday evening during the closing hours of the summer transfer window. Gakpo initially hoped for Manchester United this summer, with whom he had personally agreed for a five-year contract for some time. However, the left winger of PSV was only considered by the English superpower as an alternative to Antony. United managed at the very last minute to free the Brazilian from Ajax for a maximum of one hundred million euros and then let Gakpo shoot.

The PSV attacker had another iron in the fire in the final phase of the transfer window with Leeds United. Gakpo personally agreed and seemed to make the switch to Leeds at the very last minute, when PSV decided to accept the offer from England. According to Romano, however, the transfer was called off when Louis van Gaal called to advise Gakpo to stay in Eindhoven. The winger could also have gone to Southampton, which was even willing to pay more than Leeds, but decided against that too.

Leeds even had a private jet ready to take Gakpo to his new squad as quickly as possible. It didn’t come to that, but the peacocks are, according to Romano, ‘obsessed’ with the seven-time the Dutch international. “They will come back in January, but it will be an exciting battle because he is a top talent and many clubs are after him,” said the Italian transfer market expert.
