Chelsea announced the departure of four players through the club’s official channels on Friday afternoon. The Londoners are not only saying goodbye to Andreas Christensen who is leaving for Barcelona on a free transfer. Danny Drinkwater, Charly Musonda and Jake Clarke-Salter will also disappear from the payroll next season. The latter two both played a period for Vitesse.

Christensen’s departure had been known in the corridors for some time. The Danish central defender turned down multiple contract offers from the Blues off. Christensen looks set to become the next Chelsea defender to make the move to the top of La Liga after Antonio Rudiger. He does, however, go to work for a competitor. Barcelona are in the background making financial room to complete the transfer. This is expected to be sorted out very soon.

Drinkwater signed a five-year contract with Chelsea in 2017. The midfielder was an important link in the championship team of Leicester City in 2016. Chelsea paid more than 37 million for the Englishman. The midfielder was not really successful. Many injuries got in the way and he only played 23 official games for Chelsea. Drinking water was loaned out four times in total. However, he didn’t get to play often at Burnley, Aston Villa and Kasimpasa. Last season he played for Reading in the Championship.

Clarke-Salter leaves the club after more than fourteen years. The 24-year-old central defender never fully broke through and made two official appearances for Chelsea. The Englishman played 37 official matches for Vitesse in the 2018/19 season. This season on a rental basis in Arnhem was his most successful to date. Musonda will also remain Chelsea’s eternal promise. As a youth player, the attacker was seen as one of the club’s greatest talents. He only played three official games in the former. During a two-year loan spell, Musonda played only four matches on a rental basis for Vitesse.
