SC Cambuur has failed to win a match in the Eredivisie for the eighth time in a row. The Frisians played a 1-1 draw at home against RKC Waalwijk on Friday evening, with the Frisians equalizing well into injury time. Cambuur’s last victory in competition dates back to February 26, when Fortuna Sittard was treated to a 2-1 defeat. Both teams are still in the low middle bracket of the Eredivisie.

Both teams kept each other in check in the opening phase. Jamie Jacobs was close to 1-0 after twenty minutes, but goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen made the save before Roberts Uldrikis could become dangerous. In the remainder of the first half, chances for both goals were scarce. In the final phase of the first half, Issa Kallon was just unable to head in after a cross from Patrick Joosten, while Sonny Stevens parried a bang from Yassin Oukili with his fists. It was not really surprising that there were no goals in Leeuwarden halfway through.

Cambuur seemed to take the lead two minutes after the restart. Uldrikis worked the ball in from a cross by Kallon, but the tall striker did so in an offside position. Cambuur got away well three minutes after the disallowed goal. Finn Stokkers was stopped by Stevens, then Richard van der Venne saw a cross over the top of the bar. With eighteen minutes left on the clock, RKC took the lead in Friesland. A shot by Oukili went into the goal via Stevens and the unfortunate Doke Schmidt: 0-1. The goal also ended up in the name of the Cambuur defender. The hosts kept fighting for a positive result, but the much desired equalizer did not come.

Uldrikis did not benefit from a mess in the RKC defense in the 77th minute, to the frustration of everything and everyone at Cambuur. The Waalwijkers seemed to decide the game with three minutes left on the clock, but substitute Hans Mulder’s 0-2 was canceled due to offside. It took a while before the VAR had made a final decision. No less than eight minutes were added to the game, which turned out to be favorable for Cambuur. Uldrikis did chase a ball over the goal in a promising position. Shortly afterwards, Vaessen saved on a header from the unfortunate striker. In minute 95, substitute Milan Smit turned out to be the hero of the home team. The nineteen-year-old headed home from a sharp corner kick: 1-1. Michael Breij, who also came in as substitute, even seemed to be on his way to Cambuur’s winning goal in minute 99, but the whistle was blown for offside. Both teams therefore had to settle for a point.
