Bayer Leverkusen has had to move Tuesday’s training. It was intended that that Work Self would simply train outside on the field, but an explosion at a chemical factory is now completing a training program inside the BayArena. Due to the explosion, everyone in the Leverkusen area has to keep their windows and doors closed due to the release of hazardous substances.

A heavy explosion took place on Tuesday morning around 11 a.m., which, according to a witness, felt like an earthquake and could be heard for miles around. Storage tanks of waste management company Currenta are reported to have caught fire and exploded, creating a huge cloud of black smoke. There is a lot of fire brigade on site at the Chempark in Leverkusen, where several large companies are located, including Covestro, Bayer, Lanxess and Arlanxeo. Several people were injured in the blast, including two seriously. Five people are still missing.

However, the explosion and the resulting hazardous substances also pose a ‘great danger’ for the area surrounding Leverkusen. People in the area are warned via a crisis app and the air raid siren to keep windows and doors closed. The police have closed the streets and the highway in the area, urging people not to come near and to call the emergency numbers only in case of extreme emergency.

The heavy explosion also has consequences for Bayer Leverkusen. “Due to the fire at the waste processing plant in Leverkusen/Bürrig, the selection has to train inside the BayArena today. Everyone stay at home and make sure the windows and doors stay closed!”, writes the employer of Mitchel Bakker, Daley Sinkgaven, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Jeremie Frimpong on Twitter.
