Atlético Madrid lost expensive points in LaLiga on Saturday. Four days after the already difficult 1-2 win at Getafe, and a week after the scoreless draw against Athletic Club, Diego Simeone’s team lost 1-0 at Deportivo Alavés, which was the last of the Spanish league until Saturday. Due to the defeat, Atlético is stuck at fourteen points, two less than Real Madrid, which has also played one game less.
Simeone’s team did get the ball in the first half, but failed to create any danger or even get a ball on the goal. Alaves, on the other hand, was able to rely on an advantageous margin that already appeared on the scoreboard after four minutes of play. After a corner by Rubén Duarte from the right, it was Victor Lafuente who headed the ball from close range through the ground behind Jan Oblak: 1-0. It is striking that this season Atlético has already conceded two goals against the head after a corner after the first seven match days. That happened los Colchoneros not since the 2008/09 season.

Atlético were more dangerous after the interruption, but goalkeeper Sergio Pacheco prevented a goal from Ángel Correa twice. On the other side of the field, Tomás Pina worked the ball over Oblak’s goal at the penalty spot. Lafuente’s early goal was ultimately decisive and therefore good for the first points for the Basques this season.
Atlético last lost an official game on April 25, away at Athletic Club (2-1). Since then, twelve games in a row have not been lost. Four of those games ended in a draw.
