AC Milan managed to win at the last minute at Spezia on Saturday afternoon. Daniel Maldini made his debut in the starting line-up with Stefano Pioli’s team and graced that with the opening goal. After his father Paolo and grandfather Cesare, he became the third generation of the Maldini family to score for Milan. Just lay i Rossoneria still to lose points, but Brahim Díaz saved the win in the final phase: 1-2.
At Milan, Olivier Giroud returned from injury. The Frenchman started as a striker in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Maldini was preferred to Díaz as number ten. Although the Milanese visually dominated in the first half, the only shot on goal came from Spezia’s side. The greatest danger of i Rossoneria came from a free kick by Theo Hernández, who saw Jeroen Zoet fly right over his goal.
Three minutes after the break, Milan scored. Right back Pierre Kalulu put the ball high in front of the goal from the side, where Maldini put his head against the ball: 0-1. Rafael Leão could have increased the lead for the visitors, but the attacker waited too long and saw his shot blocked.
Spezia surprisingly came back ten minutes before the end, when a shot by Daniele Verde changed direction via Sandro Tonali and left goalkeeper Mike Maignan without a chance: 1-1. Pioli immediately brought in Díaz and that turned out to be a golden opportunity. Alexis Saelemaekers was able to put the ball back in the busy penalty area to Díaz, who scored from close range: 1-2.
