Ajax has reached an outline agreement with the management of Jorge Sánchez, reports journalist Mike Verweij van The Telegraph Wednesday afternoon via Twitter. The 24-year-old Mexican right back wants to sign a contract that will keep him in Amsterdam until mid-2027. Club América believes that Ajax should still increase the offer for Sánchez. Furthermore, Verweij claims that Ajax is not busy with the arrival of the transfer-free Dries Mertens.

The Mexican club has informed Ajax that it wants to collect an amount from which an equivalent replacement can be obtained. The newspaper expects that Ajax and Club América will soon reach an agreement, after which Sánchez will come to Amsterdam to finalize his transfer. Sánchez has been dreaming of playing in Europe for years and is eager to make the switch to Ajax.

Verweij previously indicated that Sánchez must cost around five million euros. The right-back has played 150 official games for Club América so far, scoring twice and providing eight assists. In 2019, Sánchez made his debut for the Mexico national team, for which he played 21 caps so far. In that, the defender was accurate once. Sánchez is originally a right back, but can also play on the left wing.

Dries Mertens
Furthermore, Verweij reports on Wednesday afternoon that there is no interest from Ajax in Dries Mertens. On Wednesday morning, rumors appeared in the Italian media about contact between the ex-PSV player and Ajax. The usually reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, among others, indicated that Ajax would monitor Mertens’ situation. Galatasaray, Juventus and Olympique Marseille would also be working on this, but his arrival is therefore not an option for Ajax. Mertens has been transfer-free since July 1 after his contract with Napoli expired. In 396 official games for the Italian club, Mertens scored 148 goals and 90 assists.
