Joshua Zirkzee has removed all his posts on Instagram, it turns out Sunday. The Bayern Munich attacker probably made this decision because of the insults and hate messages he received en masse after his big miss in Saturday’s friendly match against Ajax (2-2). Zirkzee had a free goal and enough time to score, but because of his delay, Perr Schuurs was able to get the ball off the line with a tackle.

The much-discussed miss went quickly viral on the internet and for Zirkzee now seems to be enough, although an explanation for the emptying of his Instagram page is not forthcoming for the time being. No messages have yet been removed on Twitter and Facebook, although the last post on the latter social media dates from August last year. The blunder is in any case no reason for trainer Julian Nagelsmann to completely burn off his striker.

Zirkzee’s Instagram page is now completely empty.

“I didn’t say anything to him (Zirkzee, ed.)” said Nagelsmann afterwards. “He knows very well himself that he could and should have done it. Hopefully in a Bundesliga match he will take it a little more seriously in such a situation. I don’t think I should talk to him now, he knows himself . And together he does a lot of good.” Nagelsmann thinks Zirkzee didn’t see the sprinting Schuurs coming at all, which may explain his nonchalant attitude.

“He just wanted the ball to simply roll into the goal. I don’t think Joshua did this on purpose,” said Nagelsmann. Zirkzee reacted in disbelief to the bizarre miss, as did teammates Omar Richards and Armindo Sieb. The Dutch attacker was taken off by Nagelsmann after an hour of playing in the Allianz Arena. It was the striker’s first appearance in front of his home crowd after his not-too-successful rental period at Parma.
