Xherdan Shaqiri is leaving Olympique Lyon after just five months. The French club of trainer Peter Bosz announces through the official channels that the thirty-year-old wing attacker has been given permission to negotiate with an undisclosed Major League Soccer club. Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Shaqiri will make the switch to Chicago Fire once the final folds have been ironed out.

The American club will pay an amount of seven million euros for Shaqiri. It is not yet known what the hundred-time international will earn in the United States, but it is certain that he has a so-called designated player and will therefore earn more than the salary ceiling. Shaqiri also earned a hefty salary (350,000 euros per month) at Olympique Lyon, which is why les gones actually wanted to discharge him after just under six months.

Shaqiri was taken over from Liverpool by Olympique Lyon at the end of the transfer window for an amount of six million euros – which could have increased by five million euros thanks to bonuses. Initially Bosz regularly made up a base for Shaqiri, but in the last weeks of the first half of the season he mainly had to make do with a reserve role. Shaqiri ended up playing only 16 games, 13 of which as a starting player, and in which he accounted for two goals and three assists.

His contract with Olympique Lyon will continue until mid-2024, but despite this, both parties will soon say goodbye to each other. Chicago Fire becomes the seventh club in Shaqiri’s career, after FC Basel, Bayern Munich, Internazionale, Stoke City, Liverpool and Olympique Lyon. By the way, Douglas Costa is also on his way to the MLS: the Brazilian winger is about to sign a two-year contract with Los Angeles Galaxy.
