Top players, but also clubs from home and abroad, provide an insight into the ins and outs of the football world (almost) every day via Instagram, X or other internet channels. In this edition of VZ Social attention to former professional footballer Willie Overtoom, who via X sparks a discussion about the place of Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer in the Dutch team.

Overtoom, former midfielder of AZ and Heracles Almelo, posted a message about Wieffer on X in the twentieth minute. “Wieffer, a great player for and at Feyenoord, but I don't (yet) see what everyone sees in him. I have to make the right choice because I don't think he will play much at a big club.”

The tweet, which has already been viewed 75,000 times, has caused quite a few (hate) reactions to X. Overtoom receives a lot of reactions about his career, as he did not make it as far as a player than Wieffer. The 37-year-old former professional once played two youth international matches for the Netherlands. Because a debut in the Dutch team was not forthcoming, Overtoom chose to play for Cameroon. On behalf of the Indomitable Lions he played three international matches between 2012 and 2013.

After a lot of interaction back and forth, Overtoom even feels compelled to post another message. “It's great that sharing an opinion can lead to so much frustration over nothing. The great thing about football is that you don't have to agree and everyone can and should have their own opinion. So many frustrated keyboard heroes, enjoy. Nice weekend!”
