For Jay Gorter, the prospects at Ajax do not look rosy. The 22-year-old closing post, who is currently rented out to the Scottish Aberdeen, saw the team from Amsterdam attract Gerónimo Rulli last winter, while 39-year-old Remko Pasveer has a new contract offer in his pocket. Gorter regrets that he has not yet heard from Ajax’s club management.

Just before his loan to Aberdeen, Gorter extended his contract with Ajax by one year until the summer of 2026. The reason for this is that he would not be allowed to be rented if he did not break open his contract. Last winter, Rulli, who came over from Villarreal, was presented by Ajax as the new first goalkeeper. “It wasn’t really a downer, but it did give me a signal: if something comes along on a transfer basis that would do me good, I wouldn’t hesitate to go,” Gorter said. Ajax Showtime.

With the arrival of Rulli, Gorter knew ‘how things stood for him’. The chance of a breakthrough in the Johan Cruijff ArenA also seems quite small next season, since Ajax is said to be working on a new third keeper. “I find the strange thing about that: I haven’t heard anything. I read it too, but I broke my contract with the idea that when I come back I can show that I can be of value and Ajax showed that they have faith in me in how I will develop. I also haven’t had a conversation with Ajax about what my perspective is like when I come back, I think that’s a shame.”

There is still a lot of uncertainty about Gorter’s future, although he is not making a big deal of it at the moment. “I do think that several boys experience that it is not all very clear,” says Gorter. The goalkeeper sees that Ajax has been searching since the surprising departure of director of football affairs Marc Overmars in February 2021. “It was different when I walked in at Ajax, of course. It’s very unclear. For me now it is important that things go well here at Aberdeen, that I play well, that I am really important to the team and that we get important points. For the summer I keep my ears open for everything.”
