Arsenal increased the gap in the ranking with pursuers Manchester City to five points on Saturday afternoon. The Gunners visited Leicester City with a goal from Gabriel Martinelli, who gratefully made use of wonderful preparatory work by occasional striker Leandro Trossard: 0-1. Arsenal proudly remains at the top of the Premier League, Leicester is not out of the worries in fourteenth place. Manchester City has now played as many matches as Arsenal, but will still play at Bournemouth at 6:30 p.m.

Oleksandr Zinchenko wore the captain’s armband at Arsenal. A heart under the belt for the Ukrainian, whose homeland was attacked by Russia exactly one year ago. Thomas Partey was still missing in midfield, so Jorginho started. Partey did make his comeback as a substitute. Eddie Nketiah lost his place in the striker to Trossard. At Leicester City, two changes could be discovered compared to the duel with Manchester United (3-0 loss): Wilfred Ndidi and Dennis Praet replaced Nampalys Mendy and James Maddison.

Arsenal clearly had the upper hand in the first half, but needed half an hour to create the first real danger. Trossard caught a deflected corner kick and hit the ball flawlessly into the top corner. A VAR procedure revealed that Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward had been grabbed by Ben White at the preceding corner: not a valid goal for Arsenal. On the other side, a goal by Leicester was also rejected because its maker, Kelechi Iheanacho, had been offside.

Within a minute of the break, Arsenal seized power. Trossard was somewhat fortunately reached on the left flank, after which the Belgian waited exactly at the right moment to put Martinelli away. The Brazilian slid the ball into the far corner: 0-1. A wonderful through ball from Martin Ödegaard on Martinelli resulted in a ticker from Bukayo Saka, which was disallowed due to Martinelli’s offside. Arsenal then played the game without giving away any real chances.
