VfL Wolfsburg has not yet won a match in the Bundesliga this calendar year and that has now cost coach Niko Kovac his job. That Wolfe occupy a disappointing fourteenth place and are six points above the relegation zone. After eleven winless matches in a row, the board has now intervened.

Kovac was appointed as Wolfsburg's new coach before the start of the 2022/23 season. In his first year he performed well and missed out on European football by a point.

But this year things look less rosy for Wolfsburg. Saturday's loss against Augsburg was the final straw for the club management. Kevin Wimmer gave the home team the lead, but after the same Wimmer received a red card, things completely collapsed.

Augsburg would eventually end the match with a 1-3 victory. After the match, general manager Marcel Schäfer informed Kovac in a personal conversation that his time at Wolfsburg is over.

“We regret that this development is taking place, but we think it is necessary to give the team new impetus and thus create peace,” Schäfer is quoted on the club website. “We would like to thank Niko and wish him all the success in the future of his career and life.”

In the meantime, Wolfsburg is busy identifying a replacement. According to Florian Plettenberg, two names are most prominent to succeed Kovac. The first name is that of Ralph Hasenhüttl.

Hasenhüttl was manager of Southampton for many years, but has been clubless for some time now. The Austrian would be interested in the job in Wolfsburg. Another candidate is Bo Svensson, who was fired from 1. FSV Mainz in November.
