West Ham United handed Liverpool their first defeat of the season in the Premier League on Sunday evening. In the Olympic Stadium it was 3-2 for the team of David Moyes, who climbs to a joint second place in the ranking. The Londoners now have as many points as Manchester City: 23 points from 11 games. Liverpool failed to narrow the gap with league-leader Chelsea, who dropped expensive points against Burnley (1-1) on Saturday. The Reds are in fourth place in the ranking after the defeat, with 22 points from 11 games.

The home side started the game energetically and took the lead within five minutes, when a turning corner from Pablo Fornals due to a blunder by Liverpool goalkeeper Allison in the own goal. the Reds disappeared. The visitors protested to referee Craig Pawson over an alleged handball by West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna and the obstruction of the Brazilian closing post, but the leader ultimately ruled that it was a regulation goal. Four minutes later, West Ham United seemed to have to continue with ten men, after a charge by Aaron Creswell on Jordan Henderson. The West Ham defender put a lot of effort into his tackle on the Liverpool defender, but after examining the footage, Pawson decided there was no foul play involved.

Midway through the first half, Ogbonna had to be replaced by Craig Dawson due to an injury. Liverpool had most of the ball in the first company, but neither team was able to create real chances. Still, the visitors were level with a free kick five minutes before half-time. On the edge of the semi-circle of the penalty area, Trent Alexander-Arnold, after a short tap from Mohamed Salah, managed to place the ball beautifully in the right corner next to the transfixed Lukasz Fabianski. After six minutes into the injury time of the first company, Virgil van Dijk managed to avoid another deficit with a nice tackle on West Ham striker Jarrod Bowen.

Both teams had more chances in the second half. From another Fornals corner, substitute Dawson headed the ball onto the crossbar on behalf of West Ham after five minutes. Two minutes later, Liverpool had a good opportunity to put the visitors ahead. An attempt by Sadio Mané, however, ended up in the hands of Fabianski. Halfway through the second half, West Ham took the lead for the second time in the game with a goal from Fornals. The Spaniard was able to get the ball low in the right corner from a counter attack on Bowen’s pass. Allison touched the ball, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the hit.

Fifteen minutes before the end, it was Kurt Zouma who made the difference to two goals for the home team, again from a Fornals corner. The Frenchman was able to head the high ball past Allison at the left corner. Divock Origi managed to make the game exciting on behalf of Jürgen Klopp’s team, when he managed to get the ball out of the spin behind Fabianski. However, Liverpool did not get further than the connecting goal.
