Despite all the rumors about his position, Ronald Koeman is looking forward to the start of the new season with a positive feeling. In an extensive interview with Sport Among other things, the imminent arrival of Memphis Depay is discussed. Koeman, who was still present on Thursday evening at the European Championship match between the the Dutch and Austria in Amsterdam, also regrets the fact that Paris Saint-Germain trumped Barcelona in the battle for Georginio Wijnaldum.
“The prospects are good,” said the optimistic Koeman. “I know that the club is working hard behind the scenes to put together a competitive team, one that is better than last season. I am sure the selection will improve.” Much seems to depend on Lionel Messi staying on, who has still not renewed his contract at the Camp Nou. Koeman is nevertheless not very concerned. “We’ve always said Messi should end his career here, so I hope there will be more clarity soon. I’m sure it’s possible, it would be great news for everyone.”

Depay must play in the vanguard next season with Messi, although Koeman does not want to get ahead of things. “The signature is still missing, but it all looks good. Hopefully he signs soon, he is an interesting player.” The Barcelona coach finds it very unfortunate that a line can definitely be drawn through Wijnaldum’s name. “That is also an interesting player who appeared in the plans of many clubs. Unfortunately, we did not have the right contacts, that turned out to be crucial. Then our story would have been more convincing. Unfortunately, we can only conclude that Paris Saint- Germain caught up with us at the last minute,” Koeman sighs.
