Slaven Bilic is the new manager of Watford FC, the English club reported via official channels on Monday afternoon. The 54-year-old Croat takes over from Rob Edwards, who was fired after only two months. Bilic has signed a contract that will keep him attached to the London club for a year and a half.

Italian owner Gino Pozzo reacts via the club website to the appointment of Bilic and the resignation of Edwards. “We believe that Rob has had enough time to develop an identity for his team, but the results have not pleased us enough in terms of hope and ambition for the future. With Slaven Bilic we are bringing in an experienced manager who has already shown in the past that he can promote his club to the Premier League.”

Watford is in tenth place after ten games in the Championship. Led by Bilic, the club of Haarlemmer William Troost-Ekong hopes to be promoted to the highest division in England. The Croatian manager’s last job was in China at Beijing Guoan. In England, Bilic previously helmed West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion. With the latter club, he managed to promote to the Premier League.

Next Sunday, the away game against Stoke City is scheduled for Watford, to then play against Joël Piroe’s Swansea City in midweek. At Watford, Bilic will meet a fairly experienced selection that includes midfielder Tom Cleverley, who is captain in London. Ismaïla Sarr is the absolute star on Vicarage Road, while former Spartan Maduka Okoye will hope to become a base player under Bilic.
